End of Summer Update 2023

Storing Spring Onions

Our head gardener, Alex, along with a team of 23 residential volunteers, has transformed the Black Isle Brewery's production garden into a bounty of rich produce and colours. This year's standout achievement is the harvest of an impressive 6,000 bulbs of garlic. Considering most garlic sold in the UK originates from over 5,000 miles away in eastern China, that’s a significant number of air miles avoided by the brewery. The courgettes, tomatoes, chillies, lettuce, spinach, and kale have flourished, and will be used in our bars amplifying the taste of pizzas and side salads for customers.

In addition to vegetables, the garden has blossomed with diverse flowers that not only beautify the surroundings but also support biodiversity. Chosen specifically for their benefits to wildlife.

The garden's success isn't solely about plants. The introduction of drystone raised beds and the Hügelkultur raised bed system has resulted in notable yields. The garden has also become a haven for diverse wildlife, from sedge warblers to weasels, each contributing to a thriving ecosystem.

There's also exciting news from the brewery. A select 750L of our Wheat beer, Weizen Wherefores, which was brewed in commemoration of the brewery's 25th anniversary has been put inside Douro red wine barrels. This barrel aged version will be available later in year in limited quantities.

The transition from summer to autumn is a moment for Black Isle Brewery to reflect on achievements and look forward to future endeavours. The dedication of the team and the continued support of customers form the backbone of these successes.

Thank you for your continued support!
